When you went out in your yard, you never expected to be bitten by the neighbor's dog. Now that you have, you're not sure what to do next. The last thing you want to do is nothing. Doing nothing will not take care of your injuries, and it certainly won't stop the neighbor's from letting their dog roam the neighborhood. You need to have a plan of action if you're going to receive the compensation you deserve for your injuries. If you've been bitten by a dog, here are three things you need to do as soon as possible.

Seek Medical Attention

Now that you've been bitten by a dog, you need to seek medical attention. This is important, even if you think the wounds are superficial. You never know when dog bites are going to become infected. Your doctor will be able to assess the injuries you've sustained, and prescribe treatment for the wounds. In order to receive the proper treatment, it's important that you find out if the dog is current with its vaccinations. If the dog isn't up-to-date on its rabies vaccinations, your doctor may need to treat you for the rabies virus. This is particularly true if the bites broke the skin or caused bleeding.

File a Report

If you haven't filed a report with the police department and animal control, you need to take care of that as soon as possible. Filing a report will allow you to find out if the dog has a history of aggressive behavior or if it has bitten someone else in the past. If the dog has a history of aggressive behavior, animal control may be able to remove it from the neighborhood.

Take Pictures As soon as you're able to, you need to take pictures of your wounds, and of the area where the attack occurred. Be sure to take pictures of both yards – yours and the neighbors. If you can see where the dog has gotten loose from – such as a damaged fence – take pictures of that area. If the dog has gotten out since the attack occurred, try to take pictures showing it roaming the neighborhood. This will help you prove that the neighbors are not controlling their pet.
